A Cleaner, Safer Waikīkī

New Trash Cans Unveiled Thanks to JTB Hawaii Companies

JTB Hawaii Group and the Waikīkī Business Improvement District (WBID) is proud to unveil a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the cleanliness and visual appeal of Kūhiō Beach Park. For years, the park’s old trash cans, which lacked lids, often overflowed and were frequently vandalized with graffiti, resulting in litter being blown around the park and into the ocean on windy days. These unsightly and ineffective trash cans not only detracted from the beauty of Waikīkī but also posed environmental hazards to our oceans.

Recognizing the need for a sustainable solution, WBID engaged with the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), who expressed support for upgrading the trash cans but faced budget constraints. Determined to address this issue, WBID spearheaded an effort to seek private sector assistance. The first company WBID President Trevor Abarzua approached was JTB Hawaii Group, a prominent stakeholder in Waikīkī known for its commitment to preserving Hawaiian culture and the environment.

JTB Hawaii Group, under the leadership of CEO Ted Kubo, enthusiastically embraced the project, generously donating the funding for 30 new specialty trash cans and their artistic designs. This significant contribution ensured that not only would the park be equipped with functional and aesthetically pleasing trash receptacles, but it would also benefit from beautifully designed wraps reflecting the natural beauty of Hawaiʻi. This generous donation was part of JTB Hawaii Group’s 60th anniversary celebration, highlighting their ongoing commitment to the community and the environment. The new trash cans address previous challenges such as the absence of lids, which caused litter to pollute the ocean and beach, animals and sometimes people reaching in, and frequent vandalism. These new bins will prevent these issues, creating a cleaner and safer environment for all.
This initiative represents a major public-private partnership, showcasing the collaborative spirit needed to enhance public spaces. The new trash cans, adorned with island-inspired artwork designed by local artists, voted and selected by JTB Hawaii Group employees, are strategically placed throughout Kūhiō Beach Park. Inspired by the theme of JTB Hawaii Group’s 60th anniversary, ‘Working together to protect Hawai’i’s unique culture, environment, and future,’ the designs include turtles (Honu) symbolizing longevity, protection, and spiritual power, associated with good fortune and tranquility. The Taro leaves (Kalo) design holds significant importance in Hawaiian spiritual beliefs, folklore, and societal organization. Additionally, these cans come equipped with foot pedals for hands-free use, promoting hygiene and convenience.

WBID extends its heartfelt gratitude to JTB Hawaii Group for their exceptional generosity and support. This project is a testament to what can be achieved when public and private sectors unite for the common good. We invite everyone to visit Kūhiō Beach Park, enjoy its renewed beauty, and join us in our efforts to keep Waikīkī clean and vibrant.
